30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 2

Day 2: Meaning Behind Blog Name

Yay! We have made it to Day 2 (and I remembered!)! If you didn't read yesterdays's post, I'm taking part in Katie's 30 Day Blog Challenge. Today's challenge is to share the meaning of the name of your blog!

The name of my blog (if you can't tell) is "Not Your Everyday Cinderella". The story behind the name...well, that's a little more complex. It all started with my Mom. She started a blog about our family and named it "Everyday Adam". And, I jumped on the blogging train and started a blog called "Everyday Lauren". In that blog, I blogged about what I was reading in the Bible and learning about at church and all that fun stuff. Then, I decided I wanted to start a blog about my life and all that fun stuff. I was a freshman away from home at college at the time and it sounded like a good idea. So, I wanted something that kind-of went with Everyday Lauren but wasn't too matchy-matchy. And I really like princesses, especially Disney, so I decided that Cinderella should be in the title somewhere. And then, I realized that I'm NOT an everyday Cinderella. I'm a unique human being created by God. I am myself. So, thus came the name, "Not Your Everyday Cinderella".

I've thought about changing it several times, but I haven't found a name that I liked better yet. So, for now, the name is staying. :)

Day 1: Introduce, Recent Picture, and 15 Interesting Facts

I found this blog challenge today via Kayla's blog and decided to join in. You can go to Katie's blog to find out more and to join in on the fun! 30 days!

Mom and Me up in Chicago
Hi! I'm Lauren. I'm twenty years old (even though TSA agents like to card me before boarding flights...). I'm a junior in college, but I'm currently taking a semester off of school. When I return back this Spring, I'm planning on Major Change #4 (Elementary Education to Business). I'm madly in love with the creator of the universe and I can't wait to find out what He has planned for my life. :)

15 Interesting Facts:
  1. My favorite color is pink.
  2. My favorite number is seven (and has been FOR-EV-ER).
  3. Monogrammed things make my heart flutter.
  4. Leggings, Nike Running Shorts, and Ugg Boots are my guilty pleasure.

  6. Dream job: Own a cupcake shop or run a child sponsorship program.
  7. I'm an Auburn fan. War Eagle!
  8. I'm guiltily obsessed with Glee. And Parenthood. And Life Unexpected.

  10. I love to read. Such a nerd, I know.
  11. Learning to quilt is my new project.
  12. I live at home with my parents and two younger brothers. Fun times, I know.
  13. My favorite movies are Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Enchanted. Yes, I'm a princess kind of girl.

ten. ten. ten.

Today is 10/10/10. Also known as October 10, 2010. Or the tenth day of the tenth month in the two thousand tenth year. And 101010 in binary is apparently 42 which is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. (That last one's for Max. My super nerd/geek of a brother.)

And since in my 101 in 1001 post I decided I would document everything that happened on 10/10/10, I decided I should probably blog about it. And since I'm lazy feeling, I'm going to do a timeline. Because those are fun! :)

6:45 am- Alarm goes off. Mom comes upstairs to make sure I have awakened.
6:55 am- Get up out of bed. Figure out what to wear to church.
7:00 am- Get dressed.
7:03 am- Begin straightening hair.
7:15 am- Downstairs. Grabbing breakfast.
7:30 am- Leave for early service with the madre.
7:45 am- Arrive at church.
8:15 am- Church begins!
8:30 am- Play the glockenspiel to accompany the choir. Gotta love the picking up an instrument after 4 years.
9:30 am- Sunday School hour begins. Time to pull out the Diet Coke. Need. Caffeine. Now.
10:45 am- Second Service begins!
12 noon- Church is done. It's time for lunch!
12:30 pm- Subway. It's Desi's turn to pick where we go to eat lunch!
1:15 pm- Run home to get changed and such. Find out that Auburn is now ranked 7th in the nation.War Eagle!
1:45 pm- Nursing home Sunday. Sing with the "choir" and visit with the residents. Have a discussion with Alabama fans. Try not to rub it in their face that we're higher ranked than they are. (And undefeated. 6-0!)
2:40 pm- Return home from nursing home. Find new ways to waste time on iTunes and Facebook.
5:00 pm- Leave to pick up Max from the church (went on Youth Camping Trip. Didn't get lost in woods or eaten by bear. May have fallen down waterfall- won't tell).
5:30 pm- Return home. Facebook while Mom does couponing.
6:00 pm- Publix run with Mom. Coupon love!
7:30 pm- Save $32. Spend $8 at Starbucks on the way home to celebrate. Love my double chocolatey-chip frappachino!
8:00 pm- It's probably time for dinner. A bagel and cream cheese it is.
8:15 pm- Set up Netflix queue. Remember this whole bloggie-dealy.
8:17 pm- Blogging is good. :)
8:34 pm- Ready to click "Publish"?

And that, my dear friends, was my day.
I will be going out of town for the day tomorrow, but I have two blog posts in my head to blog about. My high school had homecoming this past Friday (in addition to the fact that we're NUMBER ONE in the region) and I have some pictures that I plan on posting. And I'm pretty sure that there will probably be an Auburn post before a major crisis occurs and I can no longer discuss us being NUMBER ONE in the SEC and NUMBER SEVEN in the nation. So, plan on seeing updates in the next two-three days! Yay! :)

Man vs. Cat

I like animals. Really, I do. My family has a cat named Stripey. But, I'm beginning to notice an alarming trend. I don't know if it's just something going on here in my town or if it's a thing all around. I'm noticing that some people are placing animal rights above human rights. This might be controversial to some people- but I'm not apologizing. I think it needs to be said.

I guess the part that made me mad about this topic is a recent photo posted on Facebook. You can view it here if you like. A cat in the area was shot with an arrow (it's fine now). There are a few things about this that bother me about this situation.

A. The Humane Society and people commenting refuse to accept the possibility that this could be an accident. Um, hello. We live in Alabama. It is hunting season (or close to it). It is quite possible that someone accidentally  shot the cat and didn't even know it. Before you judge this person as being a horrible person that should be "hung up and shot at with arrows", find out the real story. Yes, maybe it was intentional. Maybe it was someone who finds joy in torturing animals. But-consider for one moment- that maybe it wasn't.

B. It's a cat. In Genesis, when God was creating the world, he created man to "reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground (Genesis 1:26)". When I read this verse, it leads me to believe that the sanctity of human life is far more important than the life of an animal. Does this mean I believe in abusing animals? No. Of course not. But, I think it is important to realize the value of a human life in comparison to that of an animal. When I was reading through the comments on the picture, many people were giving ideas of what they thought should be done to that person. Giving them "a lesson they won't forget", "tying them to a tree and using them for target practice",  "hung in a tree and shot with arrows", etc. Is that uplifting? Does it bring glory to God when we talk about torturing someone? No. Do we know the facts? No. Until we know the facts, we shouldn't judge. And- even then- it's a cat. A cat. An animal in which we reign over.  I don't believe that this person -even if it was intentional- should be tortured for what was done. I'm not even sure jail time is an appropriate punishment. Does it help the situation? No. Not really. It doesn't address the underlying problem. If this was intentional, why was it done? Are there underlying anger problems? Do they have a mental disorder? Is there something that can be done to help address the underlying problem and preserve the sanctity of human life? Can we treat them with respect? Can we love them? And furthermore- why do we assume that it was a male that did this? Why must we prejudge this person?

C. Why does this cat get more pity than the person killed over there on the South Side? Or wherever your "bad side of town" is? Yes. I'm being general here. But think about it. When we hear about someone getting shot on "that side of town", we tend to believe that it is there own fault. That because of their race...they don't really matter. Why is no one outraged about the shootings that go on? The violence? The gangs? The drugs? Why do we sit in our pretty little houses on Facebook saying "Poor kitty. Whoever shot it should be tortured." and yet when we read in the news about a teenager being shot in a not-so-nice neighborhood we think "They deserved it. They would have ended up in jail anyways. It's probably better that they die. It's better that they're not here to cause violence in our community." Why do we treat a cat better than a human? Where is the sanctity of human life here? Where did we forget that "reigning over the animals" means that humans are more important? Where did we forget to love our neighbor?
I'm not saying I have it all figured out- I don't. But, I'm beginning to see the injustices in our communities. We don't mind letting our youth groups go play with puppies at the human society- but going to the South Side to love on some people? Or the West Side? Never! It's too dangerous! It's too risky! Are you crazy? We are judging people based on their socioeconomic background. It's easy to love a cat. It's harder to love a brother that lives a different lifestyle. Yet, sometimes God asks us to get out of our comfort zone and embrace the hard-to-love people. And- I'm positive that he values human life. After all- He created us in His image- not the cat.

That's all I'm saying about this. For now at least. I won't get into how upset I am that it's easier to adopt a child than a cat and all that. And I won't get into how I'm upset certain council people want to cut funding to our schools to give to the Humane Society. But, next time, when you get outraged over the treatment of an animal, remember the person. Remember the value of human life. And ask how you would want to be treated.  And when you're reading the newspaper and you come across an article about a shooting on "that side of town"- remember the value of human life before you judge. Love God. Love people. Nothing else matters.

review: permission to speak freely

I review for BookSneeze

I've been meaning to post this blog post for over a month now.
Sorry Charlie. I'm not the greatest at remembering things. Add on the fact that I couldn't post the review before leaving for Chicago and forgot after the fact...we reach the date of October 5th, and Lauren is finally posting.

Permission to Speak Freely by Anne Jackson is quite possibly one of the better books I've read. It's subtitled "Essays and Art on Fear, Confession, and Grace" and I believe the subtitle is a very accurate description of the book. It's an easy read, I've read it through twice...and it took me about an hour/two each times. It isn't a hard book. It's not even super deep and theological to the point that people like me have trouble digesting it. Anne doesn't use those big scary words that some authors use...and that turn me off. The book is also full of wonderful pictures. But, they aren't just normal pictures...no. This book reminds me of PostSecret...because as part of her journey to write this book, Anne asked her blog readers what they felt like they couldn't discuss in church. And, in turn, her readers sent in postcards/artwork with their answers. She created a website with some of the artwork that is in the book (along with some new ones) and you can view it here.

My favorite part of the novel occurs on the first page- of the first chapter- in the first sentence. It reads, "Fear has always been the antagonist in my life, and most of the time, I welcomed him. Ironically, he felt safe enough, and I would allow hi to tag along as I walked through my day. I guess I'd liken him in some regard to my little brother, always following one step behind and occasionally running ahead of me." Fear is something I live with. Sometimes it seems to consume all my thoughts and feelings. But, I'm working to a better and brighter future. And this book? Is a step in the right direction.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through the Book Sneeze blogger review program. I was not required to give a positive review and the opinions expressed are my own.

It's Fall 'Yall!

It's beginning to feel a little bit like fall here in Alabama. I mean, it will probably be hot again in a week, but it's really nice to be able to go outside and not get all sweaty and gross-like. I even ventured into long sleeve+jacket territory today. It was nice.

Since the seasons are changing, I thought it was time for a blog change too. I mean, I hadn't changed it since the spring really (not counting the 2 months on wordpress. that was different). And I like these Fall colors. I was trying to think Anthropologie type (since I really like that store even though it is way over my budget). I'm not sure how successful I was on that one...but its the thought that counts, right?

I also added a new blog button (I know, yall are sick of these) since the old one...
A. Says "Lauren in Chicago".
B. The whole "I'm not in Chi-town anymore thing"
C. Totally clashed with the new color scheme. Even I knew that one. :)

So, you can go to the sidebar and get the code for the new one. It looks like this:

Pretty. I know.

In other news...Auburn is now ranked number 8 in the AP Poll. Now, if we can just keep winning games (namely that Iron Bowl), Lauren will be one happy camper. I've came to the realization that my life has changed a lot in the last two years. I mean, I care about this football thing now.

When I first started college at Auburn, I knew absolutely nothing about college football (or football in general, really). I wasn't going to even get tickets (gasp!) and really kind of hated the idea of going to a football school. But, I was talked into getting tickets by some people that had my best interests at heart and told me that I "really had to" get tickets. I mean, it was Auburn. So, I went to my first ever college football game my freshman year in college. And I liked it. Through that year, I got educated in all things football related. Things like how to wave your shaker, what to yell while waving your shaker, and when to wave your shaker (that's the important one!).

And, I left in love with this thing called college football. And I figured out why everyone says the SEC is the best conference. So, now...I care about football. I do. I've learned to hate Alabama with a passion. I don't mind spending Saturday watching games on TV. And if it's an exciting game, I'll even listen to the game on the radio. I yell at the TV. It's possible to cry when we lose. Because, you know what? It does matter.
I know more than how many points a touchdown is worth. (Even though it's not that much more. My daddy laughs at me sometimes. Especially my terminology. Um, note to self: It's quarters, not innings. And that thing they kick field goals through? Is not a touchdown post.)

A southern girl is a girl who knows full and well that she can open a door for herself but prefers for the gentleman to do it because it demonstrates a sense of respect. After all, every girl wants to be treated like a princess. We know how to make sweet tea and grits while telling you everything about any football team in the SEC. We pick our battles and fight with the heart of a pit bull while still maintaining grace and elegance. Our mystique is that of a soft-spoken, mild-mannered southern bell who could direct an army, loves her momma and will always be daddy's little girl.

It's weird. I never thought I'd say that I would like football. I never thought I would say I was an Auburn fan (I really liked my neutral status). And I most definitely would never classify myself as a Southern girl (I mean, redneck, anyone?) But, what can I say? Things change.I like football. I love Auburn. War Eagle!

Oh fall.
I love you and everything you bring. From long sleeves and jackets to Friday night football. From the leaves changing colors to SEC football season. I love you. And you might possibly be...my favorite season.

Old School Items and Sewing Adventures!

ONE...
I was going through my room cleaning out things and I found some old CDs. And so, they've now been uploaded to my iTunes. I'm going back to middle school...which means old school contemporary Christian.

If you were wondering, the first CD I ever bought was Jaci Valazquez's "Crystal Clear". I thought it was super amazing and my favorite song off of it (to this day) is "Every Time I Fall". Oh yes- we're bringing it back to 2000!

And another of my favorites was Zoegirl. I'm pretty sure it was in my dreams to be just like them. I seem to remember having a book about them. Like their ages, favorite foods, and such. But, I haven't seen it in a long time.

Oh- and please do not forget Hilary Duff. Yes- I may have listened to some Metamorphosis today. Guilty? And maybe Rachel Lampa? Did anyone else listen to these people? Or am I alone in my joy of discovering these CDs (fair warning- if you ride in my car for the next little while, chances are you will be listening to one of the above).

TWO...
I found my second grade school picture. As in the one that was the worst picture ever. As in the one I thought Mom had burned to rid ourselves of it forever, but actually, it was just hidden in the deep depths of her scrapbooking bag. Be on the lookout for a post in this upcoming week with it.

THREE...
I'm looking for fabric for my quilt that I am making for my 101 in 1001. I know, I still need to re-learn how to sew. But, I'm a very indecisive person, so I thought I should begin the search early. I know that I'll probably end up going with cheap fabric from Joanne's or something for my first quilt, but I do have several fabrics that I'm eying for once I've learned the skill. Unless I find them on super cheap clearance or something. Here's some of my favorites.

Anna Maria Horner- Good Folks Line
 (this is discontinued. which stinks)

Amy Butler- Lotus Line

Kate Spain- Fandango Line

Enough dreaming about fabric for the night I suppose.
I do hope this sewing adventure turns out better than HomeEc! :)
